After Wednesday’s expansion draft where the Las Vegas Golden Knights selected their first roster, the NHL currently officially has 31 teams and they will have the opportunity to improve their on-ice product during Friday’s entry draft in Chicago.
Online sportsbook BetOnline has put up some prop bets for the event and if you are a baseball nerd who likes to bet on sports, what could be better? If you’ve got an in-depth knowledge of the junior system, there is an superb opportunity for you to earn some money but for those who are not as familiar with those players that aren’t yet in the show, allow me to steer you through a few bets which could pay off on Friday.
Beginning at the top, let’s look at the OVER/UNDER for the number of trades there’ll be on the first day of the draft. The total is set at 8.5 with both choices on the bet paying -120 and I’m a huge fan of this UNDER.
The Golden Knights created a ton of trades prior to the announcement of the roster on Wednesday and they ended up acquiring three additional first-round picks for the 2017 draft. With numerous first-round selections changing hands prior to the entry draft, it’s unlikely we see many more trades on Day 1 — especially close to the top of the board.
Several other trades have gone down since the expansion draft with the Islanders making the biggest splash by landing former 34-goal-scorer Jordan Eberle in a swap with the Oilers. Edmonton obtained Ryan Strome and nothing else at the one-for-one that left most perplexed and bewildered. The main takeaway, though, is the fact that it seems NHL GMs are ready to obtain their transactions done whenever possible and I don’t think that may last into Friday.
Let’s move right along to my following lean at which I see the total to the number of players from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) going OVER 1.5. Swiss prospect Nico Hischier, that plays the Halifax Mooseheads of the Q, is expected to go first or second to the New Jersey Devils or the Philadelphia Flyers, meaning just one more player in the CHL’s most easterly conference will have to be taken from the first round to cash the OVER.
Three players in the Q — Pierre-Olivier Joseph, Antoine Morand and Maxime Comtois — all have a chance to go in the first round with Comtois with the very best chance.
Comtois, a right-winger for the Victoriaville Tigres, is your second-ranked player from the Q coming to the draft and several mocks have him getting picked late in the first round, maybe by the Columbus Blue Jackets. The power forward had been ranked as high as fifth in his class but a bad showing at the offensive end in 2016-17 caused his draft stock to slip considerably.
He is, however, the kind of player that Columbus has become known for stockpiling and I am confident that even if the Jackets pass him at 24, he will go before the conclusion of the first.
Those are my only strong feelings heading to the draft but there’s plenty more gambling options and should you just happen to end up in possession of some valuable insider information, give me a shout @robtrocity on Twitter.
