First-ever playoff meeting between the businesses.
Houston headed baseball with 107 wins this regular season but dropped four vs. Tampa Bay; the Astros were 2-1 in house when they last played Aug. 27-29. The teams started the 2019 year against one another in St. Petersburg, so tough to choose much from that.
The Rays struck .255 with eight home runs. Avisail Garcia, who also went yard was. Willy Adames struck .333 with a homer and 3 RBIs. Diaz was at .308 but played only three matches. Ji-Man Choi was first 5-for-18 with two homers and five RBIs. Austin Meadows, that headed Tampa in nearly every offensive category this season, hit on just .148.
Houston hit .266 vs. Rays pitching with 12 homers. Rookie sensation Yordan Alvarez was 4-for-11 with two homers, six runs and four RBIs in the three games he playedwith. Alex Bregman has been 8-for-29 with a homer and 2 doubles. Jose Altuve hit .241 with two homers.
One injury note this is that Astros shortstop Carlos Correa may play Game 1 after missing the seasons previous week because of a sore backagain.
Tampa Bays ace is Charlie Morton, that rejuvenated his profession the past two seasons with the Astros. Morton won the Wild-Card game on Wednesday in Oakland by allowing one run and five hits. He consequently wont currently be ready till Game 3 of the series once it shifts to Florida.
It will be likely AL Cy Young winner Justin Verlander of Houston vs. Tyler Glasnow at Game 1. Verlander (21-6, 2.58 ERA) led the majors in wins and was first in the AL in innings (233) and WHIP (0.80) while ranking second in strikeouts (300) and ERA. He has tons of playoff experience. Glasnow (6-1, 1.78) has none whatsoever. He made only 12 starts this season due to injury; Glasnow just returned in early September and didnt go over 4.1 innings in four begins. He is unlikely to go deep here — the Rays have a terrific bullpen and manager Kevin Cash is not reluctant to pull out his starters (except maybe Morton) very early.
Game 2 includes yet another AL Cy Young candidate in Gerrit Cole (20-5, 2.50) vs. 2018 Cy Young winner along with lefty Blake Snell (6-8, 4.29) of this Rays. Snell created just three September appearances totaling six innings and missed approximately two months because of injuries. He wont be moving heavy.
Game 3 includes midseason trade acquisition and former AL Cy Young winner Zack Greinke (18-5, 2.93) from Morton.
Houston gets the enormous starting pitching edge, but their turning isnt used by also the Rays . Tampa Bays bullpen is going to need to be nearly untouchable for the Rays to possess any shot. We just dont watch it.
