Where: Gangneung Ice Arena
After: February 10-22
Favorites: Individual (500m) – Min Jeong Choi, South Korea (+175); Elise Christie, Britain (+300); Marianne St-Gelais, Canada (+350); Relay (3,000m) – South Korea (-154), China (+250), Netherlands (+450)
As dominant as South Korean men happen to be in the individual short-track speed-skating occasions, a South Korean woman hasn’t won gold or silver at the 500-metre occasion. But oddsmakers believe that drought ends together with Choi a comfortable favorite. Choi won the world title in 2015 and showed incredible form at an occasion in Budapest back in September.
Christie battled a quad accident at that occasion and failed to get to the 500-metre closing, but insists she’s had adequate rest to challenge Choi for gold in Pyeongchang after winning three titles in the former world championships. St-Gelais could be the most intriguing name on this list, after winning four championships at the 2017 worlds in Rotterdam.
No other group on this listing is a heavier gold-medal preferred than the Korean women’s relay team, which has won five of those seven gold medals awarded in the contest and can be well-positioned to add to that total. China captured gold eight decades back in Vancouver and is expected to make the podium. The Netherlands has never won an Olympic women’s short-track relay trophy.
